As global interest in Artificial Intelligence explodes along with use of generative AI tools such as Chat GPT and DALL-E, there are questions that don’t get asked enough – Who benefits the most from AI’s capabilities and impact, and who does it harm?

This event will seek to address some of the toughest questions about AI and how its increasing growth and usage could drastically affect New Zealand society, through a conversation between three leading voices on this vital topic.

Joining us for an international perspective will be Dan McQuillan, author of Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence, in which he calls for us to resist AI as we know it and restructure it by prioritising the common good over algorithmic optimisation

And from closer to home, we are pleased to have on the panel Dr Karaitiana Taiuru, who works on digital rights for Māori communities, and is one of the leading voices on AI and colonialism, and Māori data sovereignty.

Finally, we will hear the perspective of Dr Sarah Hendrica Bickerton, who currently works as the Research & Policy Lead for Tohatoha, and brings a deep academic background as a sociologist with expertise in technology, policy, and gender.

PANELISTS:

  • Dr Sarah Hendrica Bickerton- Sarah recently became the Research & Policy Lead for Tohatoha Aotearoa Commons, following nearly three years as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in Public Policy at the University of Auckland. Her PhD research was on political participation behaviours amongst women Twitter users.

  • Dan McQuillan – Dan is Lecturer in Creative and Social Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London. He has a degree in Physics from Oxford and a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics from Imperial College, London. His book, Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence “provides an analysis of AI’s deep learning technology and its political effects and traces the ways that it resonates with contemporary political and social currents, from global austerity to the rise of the far right.”

  • Dr Karaitiana Taiuru – Karaitiana operates a boutique Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa research and consultancy company ‘Taiuru & Associates Ltd’. His specialist skills include Māori ethics with Data / Robotics / AI / and Māori Data Sovereignty (Digital and Genetic) and implementation. His PhD researched Māori Data sovereignty of biological genetic data using traditional Māori knowledge.

About Dan McQuillan’s book:

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere, yet it causes damage to society in ways that can’t be fixed. Instead of helping to address our current crises, AI causes divisions that limit people’s life chances, and even suggests fascistic solutions to social problems. In this book, McQuillan sets out an anti-fascist approach to AI that replaces exclusions with caring, proposes people’s councils as a way to restructure AI through mutual aid and outlines new mechanisms that would adapt to changing times by supporting collective freedom.”
